Working Title: Caribbean Woman Film
Synopsis: Narrated by a hilariously witty old sage bush woman, this film examines the question “what makes up a Caribbean woman?” using the post-colonial condition of the in-between as the basis of our understanding. It is in this in-between space that the Caribbean woman comes alive! — Magical yet human. Religious yet sexually liberated. European yet African. Bush yet cosmopolitan.
Character Breakdown
MOTHER: Female, plays late 30s – late 40 y/o. Elegant show stopping beauty. Motherly but still has a youthful presence to her. Big smile. Full apple cheeks. Thick tousled hair. Diamond face shape. Medium/dark skin.
DAUGHTER: Female, plays late teens – early 20s. Round/square shape face. Dark skin. Slightly edgy.
MOTHERS OF THE CHURCH: Female, 50 – 80 y/o. Afro-Caribbean or Mixed Race. Dancing ability: Moves well
SHAMAN: Female, 50 – 80 y/o. Any skin complexion. Afro-Caribbean or Mixed Race. Dancing ability: Moves well
DANCERS: Female, late teens -late 20s. Any ethnicity. Dance styles: folk, interpretive, salsa etc.
* WITTY OLD SAGE BUSH WOMAN (voice over only): Known to all as a woman of vast knowledge that lives in the bush. Everyone comes to her for her wisdom. She’s very connected to the spiritual realm. Extremely old (could have been born a slave on the islands). Because she has connection to the spiritual realm she operates with a bit of mythicism. She is a leader and a fighter for what she believes in. She is herself unapologetically. She is eccentric, sassy, and witty. She values culture/tradition while being cosmopolitan. She is assertive in that people listen when she speaks, but she’s warm + entertaining. She is a free spirit. She desires to bring joy to people, especially women, in helping them understand who they are and discover their destiny.
* CASTING NOTE: “Witty Old Sage Bush Woman” is a voice over role. The Producers are open to reviewing suitable applicants who may be based in Trinidad and Tobago, as well as in other territories.
“Mothers of the Church” and “Shaman” may have general movement, but not full on choreography. Dance skill required: 2/5
